May 5, Bill and Lesley report: We drove from I-40 to I-15 on Kelbaker Road on May 3. We did not see fields of flowers in bloom but we saw a 20+ species of plants in bloom in small groups or as individual plants. The highlights for us were mojave-aster, apricot colored mallows and indigo bush occurring many times along our route.

April 26, Nate reports: Mojave Preserve may not be painted in flowers, but someone sprinkled dozens of species beautifully! I'm in the lava areas off Kelbaker Road and I can't walk five steps without seeing flowers. Lots of bare ground, but many species of flora, too.

When will the desert wildflowers bloom? We start our report in January, plan your visit to coincide with the peak of the bloom - keep up to date with DesertUSA's Wildflower Reports. Be sure to bookmark this page for weekly updates.

Photos tips: Most digital point-and-shoot cameras have a macro function - usually symbolized by the icon of a little flower. When you turn on that function, you allow your camera to get closer to the subject, looking into a flower for example. Or getting up close and personal with a bug. More on desert photography.
