Desert Paintbrush, the most common of the dry paintbrushes, is but one of a large, easily recognizable genus of early bloomers. It grows 4 to 16 inches high and has leaves that are 1 to 2 inches long, the upper being divided into as many as 5 narrow lobes.

A member of the Figwort Family (Schrophulariaceae) this genus is named for Spanish botanist Domingo Castillejo. It is also called Painted-cup.
