Introduction to Wolves

The wolf is a predator at the top of the food chain. There is evidence that wolves have been in existence since the Pleistocene age some 300,000 years ago. The wolf is in the tales and legends of many cultures; they are famous for their dedication to the pack and for mostly monogamous pairing. Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals on average. It is thought the gray wolf, or timber wolf (Canis lupus) may have been the ancestor of our modern day dogs.

The Gray Wolf has a larger natural distribution than any other mammal except humans. It once ranged through all of North America from the Arctic Circle to central Mexico.
